Biomedical Journal Symposium has been successfully convened
The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University Successfully Convenes a Biomedical Journal Symposium
The Biomedical Journal Symposium organized by the Journal Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was successfully convened in Shenzhen on Feb 27, 2018. Chief editors, editorial board members and editorial directors from many domestic and foreign journals were invited to attend this symposium for sharing their experiences about operating Chinese- and English-language biomedical journals.
Professor Guihua Chen, the honorary president of the Third Affiliated Hospital and the president of the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, attended the symposium and gave a welcome speech, thanking journal experts for their long-term support and assistance to the journal operation of the Third Affiliated Hospital. He also looked forward to hearing valuable recommendations and suggestions from the guests. The symposium was hosted by Professor Hua Li, the Director of Hepatic Surgery Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Professor Genshu Wang, the Director of the Journal Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, introduced the history, current state, achievements and development goals for the five journals published by the center, including Journal of New Medicine, Chinese Journal of Endourology (Electronic Edition), Organ Transplantation, Chinese Journal of Hepatic Surgery (Electronic Edition) and the English-language journal Liver Research. Professor Wang also earnestly requested that experts provide recommendations and suggestions for further development of these publications, especially the newly-founded Liver Research.
Dr. Lei Cheng, the Editorial Director of Cell Research and Cell Discovery, and Mr. Gang Liu, the editor of Cellular and Molecular Immunology, gave separate reports that shared their successful experiences in running journals, entitled “How we do things at Cell Research” and “How to publish an international journal: Using CMI as an example,” respectively. These presentations provided valuable suggestions on how to develop Liver Research into a high-quality English journal with international prominence.
Professor Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan from the University of California, the Editorial Director Xinshi Chen from National Medical Journal of China, the Editorial Director Min Chen from Chinese Journal of Digestive Surgery, the Editorial Director Jing Li from Chinese Journal of Surgery, the Editorial Director Ziming Yang from Chinese Journal of Surgery, the Editorial Director Xiuyuan Hao from Chronic Diseases and Translational Medicine, the Director Ting Wang from Journal Center of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, and Professor Rongqin Zheng from the Ultrasonic Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University all attended the discussions and actively provided recommendations and suggestions for our medical journals, especially regarding the development of Liver Research.
The Journal Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital was founded in January 2005, and storied Chinese-language Journal of New Medicine that was founded in 1969. In 2007, 2010 and 2012, the center launched the Chinese Journal of Endourology (Electric Edition), Organ Transplantation and Chinese Journal of Hepatic Surgery (Electronic Edition), respectively. Now these four magazines have been collected as key journal of China technology (source journal for Chinese scientific and technical papers and citations) for consecutive years. In 2014, the Third Affiliated Hospital launched initial preparation for publishing a journal in English, Liver Research, and the effort received the support of project category D under the 2015 Program for Enhancing International Impact of China STM Journals. In March 2017, Liver Research was first published online and four issues have been published so far. The aim of Liver Research is to provide readers with a high-quality journal to ensure great impact from the very start. Up to February 2018, 13 articles on Liver Research have been indexed by PubMed, with a total of 9470 downloads.
As medical journals are important platforms for academic exchange and the embodiment of academic prominence of certain disciplines in a hospital, they drive the hospital’s growth and progress. Three journals, including Organ Transplantation, the Chinese Journal of Hepatic Surgery (Electronic Edition) and English-language journal Liver Research, were founded one after another in recent years by the Journal Center. This fully shows the power and influence of the Third Affiliated Hospital in liver transplantation and hepatopathy, and drives the construction of a hepatopathy academic platform in the Third Affiliated Hospital. By hosting this symposium, we learned greatly from other famous biomedical journals and took the chance to display our expertise in liver transplantation and hepatopathy, and extend the academic prominence of hepatopathy at Sun Yat-sen University.
