The department of gastroenterology is the key clinical specialty of Guangdong province, the engineering & technology center of gastrointestinal endoscopy of Guangdong province, the training base for Ph.D and master degree programs in gastroenterology & molecular biology of Sun Yat-sen university, and the research center for postdoctoral program in Gastroenterology. It is also the chief-scientific unit of National Project 973 and the primary work station of Sino-US Joint Research Center for Hepatocellular Carcinoma. There are dozens of students currently being trained in our master, Ph.D and postdoctoral programs.
The department contains inpatient wards, outpatient clinic (including specialist clinic, specialty clinic and vip clinic), gastrointestinal endoscopy center, unit for functional gastrointestinal diseases and laboratory for molecular biology and clinical research. It is an energetic, rising and international-oriented discipline combining academic education, medical treatment, and scientific research.
The department has 23 doctors (including 9 senior physicians, 7 attending physicians, and 7 residents) and 2 laboratory technicians. Thirteen of them have Ph.D degree and the rest have master degree. We provide medical care covering diseases of esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, as well as liver, gallbladder, pancreas and peritoneum. We specialized in the management of gastrointestinal bleeding, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, impaired liver function, gastrointestinal neoplasm, inflammatory bowel disease and reflux esophagitis. We advanced in minimally invasive treatment through endoscopy in esophageal-gastric varices and early diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal carcinoma. The endoscopy center possesses a whole set of the most advanced endoscopic equipment in the world, providing the most comprehensive endoscopic diagnosis and treatment in Guangdong province. As many as 20 thousands of patients receive endoscopic examination and treatment in our center every year.
Our department has established good cooperation with some world-famous universities, such as Saga University in Japan, Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, the University of Pittsburgh in USA, Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the collaboration will promote our department both in clinical and scientific researches.
Endoscopy Center
The Endoscopy Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, entitled to the Engineering & Technology Center of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of Guangdong Province in 2015, is committed to the innovation and popularization of endoscopy techniques. It is advanced in endoscopic treatment of liver cirrhosis & portal hypertension, and developing in early diagnosis & treatment of gastrointestinal neoplasm, ERCP procedure, and endoscopic ultrasound diagnosis of biliary tract complication after liver transplantation. Our endoscopy center has great influence in Southern China.
The Endoscopy Center is divided into Tianhe Branch and Lingnan Branch. Tianhe Branch is located in the 4th floor of the integrated building with 7 examining rooms, and Lingnan Branch is located in the 3rd floor of clinic building of Lingnan Hospital with 4 examining rooms. We have great expertise in endoscopic diagnosis & treatment, and nursing care. There are most advanced electronic system of general endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and complete set of equipment for endoscopic treatment in the center, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, duodenoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopy with amplification and optical staining, as well as ERBE APC system and high frequency electric generator. For sake of patient convenience and teaching, we are equipped with outpatient calling system and central monitor room and intended to construct a national-class training & communication endoscopy center.
We have elaborate testing items for patients, including general gastroscopy & colonoscopy, staining endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy and gastrointestinal function test. Over 20 thousand patients were tested in our center in 2015 (17320 in Tianhe Branch and 4322 in Lingnan Branch), which make us one of the most comprehensive endoscopy centers in Guangdong province.
