Introduction of the Department of Liver Surgery

The department of liver transplantation was established in 2003. It’s the national leader of transplant surgery, research and innovation. The total number of ward beds of the department of liver transplantation, plus the inpatients wards in the department of kidney transplantation and transplant intensive care unit is 113. It’s the national key discipline and the national clinical key specialty. Until now, the department of liver transplantation has completed more than 1,200 cases of liver transplantation. As the largest and most comprehensive transplant center in the Southern China, we offer individualized and ongoing care to patients before and after transplant. The transplant team is highly experienced in nearly all kinds of liver surgeries, including mesenteric thrombosis, chronic severe viral hepatitis, biliary atresia, living donor right liver lobe transplantation with inclusion of the middle hepatic vein, complex hepatectomy. Our high-quality medical care and the state-of-the-art facility have attracted patients from all over the country. Our surgeons perform major organ transplant procedures, including liver, pancreas, intestinal and multivisceral transplant. We are dedicated to find the proper organ donor for to our patient, and to improve the care experience by shortening the waiting and striving for better treatment outcomes.

The transplant team is an innovator for many transplant procedures in China, such as the modified piggyback orthotopic liver transplantation using cavaplasty technique. It has become one of the most widely applied surgical techniques in liver transplantation. The transplant team is also a pioneer of translational research for liver transplant. We have successfully applied several laboratory discoveries on treatments for post transplant complications, such as mesenchymal stem cells as salvage treatment for steroid-resistant acute rejection after liver transplantation, mesenchymal stem cells as salvage treatment for graft versus host disease after liver transplantation, allogeneic natural killer cells to treat the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after liver transplantation, etc.

 Achievements

The transplant team has won many awards, including the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, and the first prize of Science and Technology Award of Guangdong province. In 2004, a clinical and basic study on orthotopic liver transplantation received the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, which was the first award in the field of liver transplantation in China. We received research grants from various sources, including the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program), the National Natural Science Fund, and the Key Clinical Program of the Ministry of Health in China. In addition, we are the sponsor of two Chinese journals-“Organ Transplantation” and “Chinese Journal of Hepatic Surgery (Electronic Edition)”. In the past five years, the department has published more than 300 articles in both Chinese and English, including 100 articles collected by the SCI database.

Clinical Characteristics

Thanks for the rigorous scientific and clinical research conducted at the liver transplantation center of the hospital, our surgical technique for organ transplantation is advancing every year. Liver transplant procedures that take the advantage of the most current medical knowledge and surgical techniques benefited from the research finding include:

Adult Liver Transplant

Living Donor Liver Transplantation,

Partial Liver Transplantation,

Reduced Size Liver Transplantation,

Split Liver Transplantation

Combined Liver and Kidney Transplantation

The experts in the fields of hepatology, liver surgery, and transplantation offer patients the unparalleled experience in treating all forms and stages of liver disease. We first assess and then design personalized treatment for your current disease combining the application of standard medical therapy, investigational protocols, surgical therapy, transplantation or postoperative follow-up. Our center regularly conducts clinical trials for studying various treatment regimens for liver transplantation. Patients will be invited to participate in the trials of new treatments if appropriate, and the participation is entirely voluntary.
