Introduction to the department of urology

 The department of urology is a famous clinical urologic center in China for its high quality clinical care, academic studies and mini-invasive urological surgery. It performed the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in china. It’s a “National Key Clinical Specialty”, “Key Discipline of Sun Yat-Sen University” and the National Urologist Training Center of CUA (Chinese Urological Association).

The department is composed of three general urology units, one endourology center, one EWSL center, one urinary dynamic unit, one ultrasound examination room and an editorial department of Chinese Journal of endourology (electronic version). The department has 6 sub-specialties, including prostate disease (benign hyperplasia of prostate and prostate cancer), urologic oncology (kidney cancer and bladder cancer), stone disease, pediatric urology, functional urology (female urology and urodynamics) and andrology. We provide the top-ranking laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery, nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, single-port transvesical laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and laparoscopic radical cystectomy plus orthotopic neobladder in China. Endourology, especially PCNL under recumbency lithotomy position, ureteroscopic lithotripsy, flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy, has become the feature procedure in the treatment of complicated upper urinary stone diseases. Transurethral enucleation of the prostate is the main treatment option for BPH. In andrology, we perform micro-surgery for V-V and V-E anastomosis in the treatment of male infertility, and transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy in the treatment of persistent or recurrent hemospermia. In addition, we are highly experienced in the surgical management of very complicated urinary disease

Our research projected are awarded 15 million RMB grants in total, such as “early diagnosis of prostate cancer”, “the mechanisms of prostate cancer carcinogenesis and progression”, “multimodality therapy of prostate cancer”, “surgical techniques innovation of laparoscopic surgery”. We have more than 40 papers published on SCI indexed journals, and had obtained 3 patents. What’s more, the department is well known for its advanced study programs, especially the advanced endourological training program. Our trainees are urologists from hospitals in 36 provinces in China.
