Introduction of the Department of Gynecology and Family Planning

The department of gynecology and family planning is one of the key disciplines of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. It provides both master and doctoral program and is designated as the obstetrics and gynecology residency training base by Health Department. It’s also an accredited medical institution for clinical drug trial. The department consists of two parts: the gynecology and the family planning. Currently, the department has thirty-two staff, include 12 medical doctors and 20 medical masters. There are one doctoral supervisor, nine master supervisor, two Professors, nine Associate Professors, and thirteen attending doctors in the department. It has 74 inpatient beds, 45 beds in Tianhe hospital and 29 beds in Luogang hospital. The expert and specialist outpatient clinics are opened from Monday to Friday. There are 200,000 outpatient visits every year, 3,000 inpatients and 10,000 surgeries performed annually.

Under the leadership of our Director Dr. Xiaomao Li, the department offers specialized diagnosis and treatment for all kinds of gynecological diseases, including endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, myoma, ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, gynecological endocrinology, recurrent abortion, infertility and so on.

Two major techniques, gynecological endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, are largely applied on laparoscopic, hysteroscopic and vaginal surgeries. Minimally invasive surgery is a fast growing technique in the hospital and has been adapted for 80% to 90% of the total gynecologic surgeries.

Our department invests great resource in clinical teaching and training. Until now, two postdoctoral students, seventeen medical doctors and over sixty medical masters have graduated from our department. We provide bachelor program in medicine and M.D. & Ph.D. program for maternity and child hygienic. We also offer extension programs in diagnosis and treatment of cervical disease, hot issues of gynecological tumor, ectopic pregnancy and gynecological emergency and so on.

Scientific research is another major task for our clinical staff. The main research area includes prevention, treatment, epidemiology, pathogenesis and targeted therapy of endometrial cancer, as well as prevention and treatment of cervical cancer. Two research projects were funded by National Natural Science Funds. In the past, we have received several research grants awarded by provincial and municipal-level governmental agencies. The department published hundreds of paper, among which more than thirty papers are published on journals included in the SCI database. It is also the Endometrial Cancer Prevention Center in Guangdong province.
