Introduction of the Department of Obstetrics

The department of obstetrics is a key discipline and Intensive care center for maternal liver disease of Guangdong province, and is a national clinical pharmacy research base and specialists training base of the Ministry of Health in China. We are also responsible for teaching medical students and training of interns, residents, and other doctors from regional hospitals.

Obstetric department consists of three sites: TianHe branch, LuoGang branch and I BORN Maternal Hospital. Every site has outpatient wards, prenatal wards, delivery room, postnatal care (baby care), prenatal diagnosis center, perinatal care classes and postpartum pelvic floor rehabilitation center. I BORN Maternal Hospital is an international Obstetrics & Gynecology Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, specialized in providing high quality obstetrics& gynecology and neonatal VIP medical service for elite family home and abroad with the inheritance of centennial medical quality of Sun Yat-sen medical system.

We provide comprehensive specialist care for pregnant women. Our obstetric team consists of general obstetric team, high risk obstetric team and prenatal diagnosis team. General obstetric teams are responsible for serving low risk pregnant women. High risk obstetric team provides professional multi-disciplinary service for mothers with significant obstetric risk factors and various medical and surgical disorders. Prenatal diagnosis team provides pre-pregnancy or prenatal counselling, prenatal screening, prenatal diagnosis, prenatal intrauterine procedures and laboratory test.

There are 104 obstetric beds and 143 clinical staffs, including 4 chief physician, 6 associate chief physician, 12 attending doctors, 18 resident doctors, 36 midwives and 67 nurses. Our department serves more than 110,000 outpatients annually and delivery over 10,000 babies every year. Being a tertiary referral center of center, obstetric department also receives more 100 high risk or complicated pregnant women from other hospitals of Guangdong province.

Our specialty include pregnancy complicated with chronic hepatitis B infection, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, liver function failure during pregnancy, prenatal screening and diagnosis, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, HELLP syndrome, placental previa with accrete, gestation diabetes mellitus, preterm labor, and cervical incompetence, etc. We also provide epidural labor analgesia service available for 24 hours.

Our obstetric laboratory provides first-trimester and second-trimester prenatal screening for Down syndrome and other latest advanced techniques, such as FISH, MLPA, aCGH, SNP array and non-invasive prenatal fetal DNA testing, et al. We perform prenatal invasive procedures, such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and cordocentesis for pregnant women with high risk of prenatal screening and fetal anomalies.

Our department has established international communication and cooperation with some famous universities and hospitals, such as Johns Hopkins University, University of Kansas, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Western Australia.

Diagnosis: chronic hepatitis B infection during pregnancy, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, liver function failure during pregnancy, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, HELLP syndrome, placental previa with accrete, gestation diabetes mellitus, preterm labor, cervical incompetence, premature rupture of membranes, oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage.
