Introduction of the traditional Chinese medicine department
The Chinese medicine department is the national key clinical specialty (hepatology specialty of traditional Chinese medicine); the key hepatology specialty of traditional Chinese medicine in Guangdong province. The department is part of the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Study Center of Sun Yat-sen University. It owns the Key Laboratory of Cell Molecular Biology of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China, comprehensive treatment room, and national key specialty hepatology laboratory.
The department has 21 physicians, including 3 senior doctors, 5 junior physicians (4 of them are graduated students supervisor), 8 attending physicians, and 6 residents. There are some special clinics inside the department, such as TCM hepatitis clinic, liver cirrhosis clinic, TCM tumor clinic, TCM breathing clinic. We use integrated approach-combining traditional Chinese medicine, western medicine, and natural therapies-to diagnose and treat viral chronic and severe hepatitis, liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and other complications. In addition, we also use the integrated approach to treat gynaecology diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, endocrine disease, rheumatism and digestive disease. The treatment effect has reached domestic advanced level.
We provide master program in Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine and advanced education program in Chinese medicine for students from all over the country. The department used to carries out one National "973" Plan-funded traditional Chinese medicine research projects and 6 National Natural Science Foundation of China-funded research projects; 4 National Science and Technology Major Project-funded viral hepatitis research projects. In addition, it carried out 7 WHO-funded and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China-funded research projects, 7 province government-funded research projects, and 10 provincial agencies-funded projects. What’s more, it has published more than 200 papers (12 of them are published on journals selected by SCI database), 49 monographs and textbooks. The department won one second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, one first prize of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Achievement Award and one first prize of Science and Technology Achievement Award of Ministry of Education.
