The Emergency Department (shortened as “The Department”) of The Third Affiliate Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University was established in 1989, and it is one of the early hospitals to set up the emergency department. After more than 30 years of development. The Department has become a comprehensive unit which has mutil functions including emergency treatment, clinic medicine teaching and research etc. It has become the largest emergency medicine specialty in the east of Guangzhou. The department has become a key clinical specialty of Guangdong Province, the standardized training center for emergency residents of Guangdong Province, the awarding point of master's degree in emergency medicine of Sun Yat-sen University, the emergency medicine teaching and research department of Sun Yat-sen University, Sun Yat-sen University, the core department of China Chest Pain Center Certification Unit and the China Advanced Stroke Center The core department of the construction unit is the Emergency Medicine Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association, the Emergency Medicine Professional Committee of the Guangdong Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine Society, the Disaster Medicine Professional Committee of the Guangdong Integrative Medicine Society, and the Deputy Chairman of the Emergency and Disaster Emergency Professional Committee of the Guangdong Health Management Society unit.
The Department has a very strong professional team who has sound experiences and expertise. Currently, there are currently 42 doctors on a regular basis, all of whom have a master's or doctorate degree, including 1 professor/chief physician, 5 associate professors/associate chief physicians, and 23 attending physicians.The Department also has a nurse team of 116 members, including 3 Associate Chief Nurses, 28urse-in-charge and 54 primary nurses.
The Emergency Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is currently composed of two departments (Tianhe Hospital and Lingnan Hospital), covering a total area of about 6,059 square meters, both of which are equipped with internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, otolaryngology and other departments. There are also different functional departments, including emergency ICU, rescue room, debridement room, operating room, treatment room, infusion room, emergency inpatient ward and observation and treatment area.
The department has its own registration office, toll collection office, and all kinds of advanced emergency treatment equipment and facilities, including MODUTE ICU motorized bridge, PHILIPS multi-functional electrocardiograph monitoring systems、PHILIP and ZOLL defibrillation pacing monitoring machines, THUMPER cardiopulmonary resuscitation machines, NEWPORT HT50/VELA/ RAPHAEL/GALILEO breathing machines, HOYA Co., Ltd. fiber bronchoscope, portable color Doppler ultrasound system, Aquarius V6 REG blood purification machine, PARAMOUNT rescue beds and transportation beds. All the treatment beds are equipped with bedside central oxygen inhalation systems, negative pressure suction system and calling system. The department currently has 19 rescue units and 12 monitoring units, 6 emergency care unit (EICU) beds, 51 inpatient/observation beds, and 4 emergency care ambulances.
The Department serves a key role to provide pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency services for all kinds of urgent cases in Guangzhou East Districts. In the past three years (2018-2020), the annual average number of emergency visits exceeded 320,000, pre-hospital emergency treatment exceeded 6,000 trips per year, and more than 20,000 patient visits per year, ranking among the best in large general hospitals in Guangzhou. The department can meet the needs of all emergency patients, for all kinds of emergency and critical diseases such as cardiac arrest, sepsis, malignant arrhythmia, stroke, various shocks, trauma, various organ failures, severe water, electrolyte and acid-base. Patients with balance disorders and various types of poisoning can undergo invasive or non-invasive circulatory, respiratory function monitoring and support, as well as rescue treatments such as temporary cardiac pacing and blood purification, with a rescue success rate of over 98%; for acute chest pain, stroke and moderately critically ill patients It directly enters the green channel of chest pain and stroke, and realizes the seamless connection between pre-hospital and intra-hospital, which greatly reduces the mortality and disability rate of patients.
In addition, The Department provides theory teaching for 8-year program Clinic Medicine students and 5-year program Emergency Medicine students from Sun Yet-Senuniversity. It also provides clinic intern and resident physician training opportunities. As training center for emergency medicine physicians standardization training in Guangdong province, The Department also takes responsibilities including teaching Master students in Sun Yet-Sen University, training resident physicians from The Third Affiliate Hospital and other hospitals, and providing clinic intern, resident opportunities for nursing students from Sen Yet-Sen University and other colleges. So far, The Department has launched 3 national-level projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 10 provincial-level projects such as the Guangdong Natural Science Foundation and Guangdong Science and Technology Plan Projects, and 2 department-level projects such as the Guangdong Medical Science Research Fund and Guangzhou Science and Technology Plan Projects. In the past five years, the whole team has published more than 200 scientific papers, including more than 30 high-level papers, more than 150 papers in Chinese core journals, and applied for more than 10 patents.
