Introduction of the department of pathology
The Department of Pathology, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, was established in 1986. It provides top-ranking medical services, scientific research and education in the field of pathology. It is granted to be the station of Master’s & Doctor’s degree program, the key clinical specialty of Guangdong Province and the training center of residents & specialist pathologist.
The department has over 30 staff, including 15 pathologists, 17 technicians, and 2 clerks. All of the pathologists have Master’s or higher degrees, 4 of whom have senior titles and 8 have the intermediate titles. While 2 of the technicians are senior specialists and 1 has the intermediate title.
The department provides a full range of pathological diagnostic services, including anatomic surgical diagnosis, intraoperative frozen section diagnosis, cytology diagnosis, autopsy, pathology consultation, molecular pathology diagnosis, remote pathological diagnosis, automated immunohistochemical detection system, CTC detection system and so on. Approximately 30,000 surgical specimens, 2,500 frozen section specimens and over 20,000 cytological specimens are examined annually,with an average annual growth rate of 15%. The department participates in the remote pathological consultation meeting in Guangdong Province and around the world.
The sub-specialties include hepatobiliary and gastroenterologic pathology, breast and reproductive pathology, thyroid pathology, genitourinary and renal pathology, hematopathology, soft tissue and bone pathology, neuropathology and dermatopathology. Based on the advantage of hepatology of our hospital, the department has superior levels in hepatic pathology diagnosis and a broader influence in southern China. Liver pathology diagnosis courses have been held for many years in succession, and have won the praise of the trainees from all over the country.
As the Master’s &Doctor’s Degree base and the resident training base in pathology, more than 30 residents are receiving or have completed the pathologist training. 30 students have graduated from our Master or Ph.D programs. In the recent five years, The department has obtained over 20 national and provincial and ministerial issues, including 10 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). More than 200 papers published, including over 50 SCI papers with the highest impact factor of 12.042. Some of the research results were invited to be displayed at international academic conference.
